Reasons to celebrate your health

This Friday (21 May) is filled with activities to embrace and celebrate your health. Friday consists of Meditation Day, International Tea Day and Bike to Work Day. You might as well make a weekend out of it, here is how you can celebrate.

Meditation Day

World Meditation Day is the golden opportunity to take a moment for yourself and clear your mind. Meditation has been included in religions for thousands of years. We know it to have been done as early as 1500 BCE in India. However, it need not be a religious ritual only. In fact, it is proven to be an effective way to calm yourself, relax and ease stress.

Benefits of meditation include:

  • Easing anxiety
  • Reducing stress
  • Sharpening your focus
  • Clearing the mind

You can meditate sitting, standing, lying down anywhere. Simply close your eyes, focus on your breathing. If you start having thoughts, acknowledge them, then wave them off. You can use a form of white noise if you are unable to block out external noises. Celebrate this gift to your mind and take some time this weekend to practice some selfcare.

Bike to Work Day

It may be too late to get on a bike to work now, but feel free to take a ride over the weekend. Not only is this an eco-friendly activity, it’s an opportunity to take your time to truly experience your surroundings and the change of the season setting in before winter. You get to breathe in some fresh air, get your blood pumping and get a workout all in one go. Better yet, make this a family activity.

International Tea Day

We are not spilling the tea today! Tea is taken very seriously, so much so, that 150 representatives from tea organisations gather and conduct a seminar each year. They then discuss problems the tea industry has as well as problems faced within their own country, with regards to climate change.

Tea is one of the healthiest warm beverages once can consume, especially when no sugar is added. Herbal, Rooibos or Green, they all have wonderful benefits, including but not limited to:

  • Less caffeine than coffee
  • Soothes the digestive system
  • Contains antioxidants
  • May reduce risk of stroke and heart disease
  • May reduce blood pressure
  • If taken without milk and sugar, is practically calorie-free
