Starting Solids : A Food List For 8 – 12 Months

It’s time to start weaning your baby on to solid foods – but what should you offer your little one? Here is a list of foods suitable for babies between the ages of 6 and 8 months.

PROTEIN

All meat proteins (including fish) in the list below should be steamed or slow cooked, thoroughly blended, and combined with veggies.

  • Meat proteins: white fish, fatty fish (such as salmon), tuna, chicken, lamb, pork, ostrich, turkey, beef and venison
  • Dairy: yoghurt (smooth, plain, full cream) and cream cheese (smooth, plain, full cream)
  • Tofu: soft white
  • Eggs: hard boiled or poached, and blended into vegetables
  • Pulses: chickpeas, lentils and butter beans, cooked until very soft, then puréed
  • Nuts: peanut butter and tree nut butters (soft, smooth and sugar free)
  • Soya milk

STARCH

The starches below should be finely ground, and well cooked to a porridge consistency:

  • Rice
  • Maize
  • Spelt
  • Millet
  • Wheat
  • Rye
  • Potato purée

VEGETABLES

You can introduce any and all seasonal vegetables, which should be cooked and puréed. Choose vegetables in a variety of colours: green, yellow, orange, red and white. Flavour your vegetable purées with other veggies including spring onions, red onions, fennel and garlic, and with herbs such as origanum, basil, parsley and sage.

FRUIT

Offer your baby any and all seasonal fruit. You can cook and purée the fruit, or blend it raw.

  • Olive oil
  • Olive paste
  • Avocado oil
  • Avocado purée
  • Butter
