Make-up bag essentials – must-haves and must-go’s

Tanya Myburg, cosmetics consultant at Mopani i’langa shares her top tips for your make-up bag essentials.

What is type of make-up remover works best?

“Micellar water. I like the Garnier Micellar Oil-Infused Cleansing Water, 400ml. It is suitable for sensitive skin, and has a nourishing effect. It can take off waterproof make-up too.”

Make-up bag must-haves?

As we are wearing masks at the moment, a bold eye with a natural lip is more practical. Tanya recommends:

Moisturiser

There is a fantastic product for every skin-type, including a hydrating lip balm.

  • Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion (available in-store)

It hydrates the skin for a smooth make-up look.

Foundation

  • Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation (available in-store)

It wears for 24 hours without creasing, streaking or caking. It is mask-friendly, transfer-, sweat- and humidity resistant.

Mascara

This L'Oreal mascara will leave your lashes looking longer without smudging, flaking or clumping.

  • Estee Lauder Double Wear mascara (available in-store)

It has a zero-smudge formula and lengthens the lashes beautifully.

  • Gosh Bombastic Crazy Volume mascara (available at Mopani i’langa specifically)

This mascara gives a lot of added volume.

Eyeliner

It is a long lasting, water proof and easy to use felt pen liquid eye liner. Once the line has dried it is smudge proof.

Eyebrows

Maybeline has a variety of products to fluff up, tidy, brush, fill and set your brows. Your brows frame your face, and can make or break your eye make-up look.

Eyeshadow

Clarins offers a variety of single colour eyeshadows. You can pick your favourite colours without having to buy a palette with colours that you know you won’t use.

This pallet offers a good variety of colours that are neutral enough to move between summer and autumn looks.

The added glow

This will help you get that natural glow on your cheekbones.

Lipstick

This lipstick is formulated to have minimal transference, and will stay in place for longer. There are many shades to choose from. You can opt for a natural shade if you are going for a bold eye with your mask. If you are working from home and you are using zoom, you can opt for a bright and bold colour.

Brushes

Unless you experiment with make-up a lot, you probably won’t use every brush in a large set. This five-piece set is just perfect to get the basics of packing and blending product on the skin.

Setting spray

This setting spray will help set your make-up in place, and offers resistance to heat and humidity.

What do you use to make minor corrections such as eyeshadow powder dust on your cheek or a smudged lipstick?

“I do my eye make-up before the rest of my face. If I get eyeshadow on my cheeks, I can wipe it off without ruining my make-up. I use concealer and a brush to cover any overline or smudge.”

What type of make-up should you get rid of if you still have it?

“I would get rid of any old eye-shadows, mascara or eyeliner. Your eyes are the most sensitive part of your face. You can easily have an allergic reaction or eye-infection if you are using old product.”

Mascaras, acne pads, face peels and masks should not be kept for more than three months. Liquid liners, liquid foundation, concealer, eye creams, serums and face washes should not be kept more than six months. Cream products should be discarded after a year, and powdered shadows should be thrown out every two years.

How do you keep your make-up bag organised?

“I don’t have any unnecessary products in my make-up bag. I only keep items that I use daily. I wipe my products down before I return them to the bag each time, so everything stays clean. It is important to clean your brushes regularly too.”

To clean your brushes daily is recommended, however, not realistically possible for everyone. Therefore, a proper deep clean is recommended once or twice a week. Since many of us have sanitisers at home now, you can squirt a bit of sanitiser into a bowl, and give your brushes a quick dip-and-swirl on the days between deep and thorough cleaning. It should rinse some of the product off, disinfect the bristles, and due to the high-volume alcohol content, it should air dry much quicker.
