Food poisoning vs. stomach bug

It is not always easy to spot the difference between a stomach bug and food poisoning, as the symptoms are very similar. Both conditions can lead to dehydration and severe discomfort; knowing how to handle it will bring much needed relief.

First, let’s spot the difference:

In both cases, the main objective will be to consume foods and liquids that will not offend your sensitive stomach further.

You may wish to fast for a few hours and stick to liquids, but after a few hours you will need to eat something. Being too hungry may cause further cramping and nausea.

Stick to food that is a natural, bland and unprocessed as possible. You can use a bit of sugar and salt to balance your sodium and energy levels, but leave spices out.

A, B, C’s

Apples, bananas and carrots are great options, as the combination contains a blend of healthy nutrients, electrolytes and fibre, to help move things along and settle the stomach.

After that, you can try plain yoghurt, bran or oat cereal, whole grains, toasted bread and vegetables.

You can add some honey, eat a spoonful on its own or mix it with your water or tea for an added boost.

What to drink

Avoid drinking carbonated and sugary drinks if possible, as they have little nutritional value and will not help you replenish your electrolytes. Black tea or rooibos tea with some honey, or water and ice chips will help to keep you hydrated. If you feel up to it, you can also consume some chicken or veggie broth.

You can also use Rehidrat sachets to help replenish your electrolytes.

For a boost

You should take a probiotic to help your gut keep up the healthy bacteria and help your tummy settle faster.

When to see a doctor

A stomach bug can clear out between a day or two, or it may last for up to 10 days. If your symptoms are mild to moderate, you may be able to treat it with OTC medication and some self-care.

If your symptoms persist for more than two days, or becomes severe, it is best to see your doctor as you may need to receive some fluids and medication intravenously, or be prescribed medication.

If you suspect food poisoning, it may be wise to consult your doctor as soon as possible, as an antibiotic or other medication may be needed, depending on what you ate. In the case of bacterial or viral infections, it may be serious and require immediate treatment. A food sensitivity such as intolerance to rich foods may be caused by an underlying condition, that require further diagnosis to prevent it from occurring again.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor immediately:

  • Fever
  • Bloody stool or vomit
  • Severe abdominal cramping
  • Shock
  • Loss of consciousness
