Beauty can be Cruelty-Free

While many people trip over semantics and technicalities, the world of cosmetics is evolving. Many brands are embracing fully vegan and cruelty-free principles.

Mopani Pharmacy is proud to be authorised stockists of quite a few vegan and/ or cruelty free beauty product ranges!

Pureology

Pureology is a hair care range with shampoos, conditioners, treatments and styling aids. They pride themselves on their environmentally friendly business practices, as the company takes extraordinary measure to minimise secondary packaging and water use during the manufacturing process. Their products are paraben and mineral oil-free, as well as 100% vegan. None of the products are tested on animals. This high-quality hair care brand boasts sulphate free shampoos and high concentration formulas with leak-proof caps to ensure that your hair retains its colour and moisture, for longer.

Catrice

Catrice is a cosmetic brand that offers everything from make-up to nail polish and gels. Although not all of their products are fully vegan, none of them are tested on animals. To make sure about which is which, look for labelling on the packaging that would indicate that the product is vegan or cruelty free.

African Extracts Rooibos

This 100% vegan and cruelty free range is one of our favourites. It has skincare products that include face washes, scrubs, lotions, creams, soaps, body butter, oils and more. The ingredients are mostly plant based – and all of them contain Rooibos, one of South Africa’s favourite plants to be used not only for our famous tea, but also in many cosmetic products, due to its powerful antioxidants.

Harvest Table

Collagen is a beauty ingredient one should not forget to include into your regimen. It is part of everything in your body, and acts as the glue that keeps everything together. Most collagen supplements are made from animal sources, but Harvest Table has a vegan pea and rice protein powder supplement available. This Vegan Protein Powder contains the same quantity of Glycine and Proline (amino acids needed for natural collagen production) as a normal animal-based collagen. It also has the Bamboo Silica mineral added to boost collagen production and to act as an anti-inflammatory agent in the body.

Disclaimer: This is not a collagen supplement but rather a collagen production boost.

Avène

The Marquis de Rocozel’s horse was suffering from stubborn pruritus in 1736. He was healed after a few swims in the Orb River of Avène. This is how the soothing, anti-irritating properties of Avène Thermal Spring Water were discovered.

Avène is a cruelty free brand that uses natural spring water as its key ingredient, however, they made the following statement on their website:

“We do market our products in China. Here tests are imposed by local regulations and performed by private laboratories accredited by the Chinese authorities. Some of these tests are performed on animals.  Eau Thermale Avène Laboratories actively support actions taken by Cosmetics Europe to persuade Chinese authorities to suspend these tests on animals and to use alternative methods available. We believe that by working with the Chinese authorities we will be more likely to succeed in this objective, and we will continue to actively pressurise them until there is a resolution”.

Avène offers a wide range of products for all skin types with a strong focus on skin protection and restoration. View their range in-store at Mopani Pharmacy.

Products that do contain animal derivatives are the Soothing Eye Make-Up Remover (silk amino acids), Active Moist (silk amino acids), Sheer Tint (hydrolysed pearl) and Skin Perfect Primer (hydrolysed pearl). Other than those, the rest of their products are 100% vegan.
