Dry hair and scalp in winter

During winter, our scalp and hair tend to dry out quicker, causing an itchy, grassy, tight feeling. We can treat our bodies with a lovely lotion, and reapply after every shower. With hair, this can be tricky. We don’t want to apply too many products as this can leave it greasy after a day or two. Here are our top tips to treat winter dryness.

Switch up your products

During summer, you may use a deep cleansing shampoo to remove hair product, sweat and dirt. In winter, we are usually less active and we sweat less. Try a sulphate free shampoo or a co-wash that is gentler on your scalp and hair. If you are worried about build-up, you can use a clarifying shampoo or your usual product every third or fourth wash.

100 Strokes

It is said that women used to brush their hair 100 times every night. There is some merit in this. It will not work all that well for someone that wants to preserve their curls, but for everyone else, it can really help. Brushing your hair from root to tip will pull your natural oil and any other debris from your scalp, down and through your hair. This adds a natural moisturiser to your hair, and removes some of the oiliness around your roots.

Conditioning the right way

It is important to condition and treat your hair from the ends, up. This solves the problem around oily roots and dry tips as well, as the product is working in the right areas.

Scalp treatments

Although we are avoiding unnecessary products on the scalp, we can definitely make use of scalp treatments. A scalp oil or serum to moisturise your scalp will do wonders in treating dryness.

Don’t give up

The trick is finding the right amount of product for your hair without greasing it up. If your hair appears oily after a day, try to use a bit less and see if it works better the next time. Many make the mistake of just giving up on a product if it does not work the first time. Take into consideration that your scalp is used to producing a certain amount of oil to compensate for the dryness. If you treat your scalp well, it will adjust.

Hydrate and supplement

Drinking enough water, taking in omega 3 and a multivitamin will keep your skin and hair healthy, hydrated and ensure that your skin builds a moisture retaining barrier.
