Cosmetic Trends – To follow or not to follow

Beauty trends are ever-changing, and everyone has their own preferences. We are focusing more on what is healthy, and what is harmful.

Collagen supplements

Collagen helps our skin to stay plump and elastic. Our ability to form collagen diminish as we age. It is part of everything in your body, and acts as the glue that keeps everything together. Increasing your intake of collagen may promote anti-aging and have skin healing effects, as well as keeping your bones supple.

One of our favourites is the Beauty Gen Beauty Greens range.

DIY facemasks

Using household items to create beauty treatment facemasks are trending. Many YouTubers and bloggers have step-by-step tutorials for this. This is not always the best idea for your skin. Aside from wasting a lot and making a mess, ‘natural’ does not always mean ‘good’.

A lemon is packed with antioxidants and vitamin C. However, the pH level is too acidic for your skin. You will benefit more by consuming lemon than using it directly on your skin.

The other problem with DIY facemasks is all about the science behind it. Incorrect combinations and high concentrations of certain ingredients can wreak havoc on your skin due to chemical imbalances.

The molecular structures of some items are bigger. This presents an opportunity for clogged pores.

Unless you are educated in dermatology and chemical / biological sciences, it is best to leave skincare to the experts. Your mask may feel great in the moment, but you have no idea what you are unleashing on your skin in the long run. Stick to reputable, tried and tested skincare products.

Eco-friendly beauty

Many brands are moving away from animal testing and unsustainable ingredients and packaging. Consumers worldwide have demanded that the cosmetic industry improve. As we look to our future, we hope to see landfills and waste management centres have less plastic; our oceans and forests, thriving once more.

Permanent false lashes

It looks amazing for a while, and then you are stuck with the awkward ‘crow’s feet’ on your eye-lid. Not only does it cost a lot of money for a touch-up, they tug and pull on your own lashes. This weakens them and increases the chances of them falling out.

Rather get a lash strengthening formula mascara that will give you the boost you need. We recommend: ALMAY Multi-Benefit Mascara.

Make-up as your sunscreen

Many products have fantastic ingredients such as SPF, antioxidants and moisturisers. When you apply a foundation, you use only one or two pumps at most. You need to use at least a teaspoon of sunscreen on your face. Given that there are all sorts of ingredients in your make-up, you will need twice as much to get the same protection. Now imagine how horrible you will look with two teaspoons of foundation on your face.

Don’t rely on your make-up alone to provide the protection you need. Always apply sunscreen in addition to your make-up. The perk is that you will need a little bit less sunscreen to start with. We recommend: Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Sun Defence Cream for Face SPF 50, 50ml

Pimple extractions

Pimple extraction tools are available to the public at affordable prices and everyone is having a go at it. Are you sterilising it between uses? Are you using it correctly? Chances are, you are creating multiple open wounds on your face, that may all cross contaminate and get infected.

Rather make an appointment with Rozanne at the Mopani Salon to get a facial, and a consultation with advice on what products will be suitable for your skin type.
